How much of the wealth do the poorest 50% own, and how has this share evolved over time? – Stone Center

“…in 2020, the poorest 50% of U.S. households (or individuals depending on the sources) owned only less than 2% of the nation’s total private wealth, one of the lowest levels among OECD countries. For comparison, Panel 2 contrasts the U.S. alongside seven other OECD countries using data from the Luxembourg Wealth Study. The wealth share held by the poorest 50% in other countries is:

  • 8.4% in Australia (2018)
  • 6.4% in Canada (2019)
  • 3.7% in Germany (2017)
  • 7.9% in Finland (2016)
  • 9.8% in Italy (2016)
  • 7.7% in Spain (2017)
  • 8.2% in the U.K. (2019).”
