Workers in these states just got a pay raise – CNN

“Hourly minimum wages increased in 21 states on Wednesday, as part of ongoing efforts to have pay keep up with the rising cost of living or to meet milestones such as a $15-an-hour minimum wage. The increases — which range from 18 cents to $1.75 (hello, Delaware) — are expected to affect more than 9.2 million workers, raising their pay by a combined $5.7 billion, according to the Economic Policy Institute.”

Over 9.2 million workers will get a raise on January 1 from 21 states raising their minimum wages – EPI

“Most January increases are the result of state laws that index the minimum wage to inflation. Fourteen states are increasing their minimum wages through automatic annual inflation adjustments, containing more than half (57.9%) of the workers affected by this year’s increases. The average full-time affected worker in these states will make around $420 more annually.”

Virginia is among the states that adjust the minimum wage for inflation – something all states and Congress should consider. Virginia’s minimum wage for tipped workers, however, remains at $2.13 per hour, the floor set by the federal government.
