The US should take a calibrated approach to immigration policy. There is high demand, and need, for additional highly skilled and educated workers in high tech and other industries to facilitate economic growth. In contrast, at the bottom of the labor market, unrestricted inflow of unskilled, undocumented immigrants reduces workers’ bargaining leverage, resulting in lower wages often falling below the cost of living.

So: open the gates carefully at the top and close them at the bottom.
