Map Shows When Early Voting Starts in Each State – Newsweek

Map Shows North Carolina Counties Leading Turnout as Early Voting Begins – AP

Because of the Covid pandemic, the 2024 US presidential election may already be decided. In 2020, Covid accelerated the practice of early voting, which all but a few states now allow. Despite fears of exposure to the virus, longer periods in which to vote resulted in the highest US voter turnout in history.

More time to cast ballots allows more low-income people to vote. Low-income workers face more barriers to voting than professional people including more restrictive schedules, less flexibility to take time off, and transportation barriers. Before Covid, low-income people voted at a rate about 20 percentage points lower than higher income voters. It will be interesting to see if early voting is giving them more voice in national policy.
