Thanks to Richard Reeves for highlighting this disparity. It’s also possible that hyperfocus on identity politics in the US may have resulted in limited exploration of the relationship between income and suicide. In work on inequality, Social Security and aging, we’ve found a clear relationship between life expectancy and income, e.g. Suicide rates may be intertwined with males’ declining economic and social status.
