Fairfax County to pilot guaranteed income program for some people – WRIC
The dopey county where we happen to work is randomly giving away income to families in the lower end of its middle class while excluding the lowest income families needing help the most from an experimental, $2-million “universal income” type program. Fairfax County, VA takes the same policy approach with its housing subsidy program, which for years has excluded the lowest income (that is, when vouchers are available – none were available a few months ago). Similarly, “low-income” slots negotiated for new housing projects tend to be geared to residents on teacher’s salaries who can’t afford to live in county anymore. The county’s unspoken message to laborers, retail workers, food workers, personal care workers, maids, day care staff and the rest of the low income: Work here – but don’t think about living here.
